There is no other music anymore, only this video of Ray Lamontagne singing Shelter live. I’ve been listening to this song and Beastie Boys for two weeks straight. That’s it. Nothing else. Actually, not true, I was stoned and heard Rihanna’s “Live Your Life” the other night and then spent 45 minutes googling colleges in Seattle because her song really spoke to me and I need to get out of this place and just live my life. Heyyy-ayy-ayy-ayyyy.

But anyway, Ray. I just realized that Ray is tricking humans, and I’m not even talking about the voice thing.

See, it’s like John Mayer. John Mayer is tricking humans ALL day. He wrote Daughters, y’all. DAUGHTERS. You listen to that shit? Can you imagine being 15 and hearing that? And thinking that people really, honestly care about you that way? That there’s mondo-attractive men out there who are like, “nah, dude. Don’t mess with that lady’s feelings. She’s a daughter. Gonna grow up to be a mother. Keep her emotionally safe.”

Listen, I like John Mayer. I really do. You know that. I was 15 when Your Body is a Wonderland came out and I heard the words “I’ll never let your head hit the bed without my hand behind it,” so I mean, OF COURSE I LIKE JOHN MAYER. You couldn’t be a 15 year old girl in 2001 and not like John Mayer.

I dropped 65 bucks to see him in concert when I was 16 and I screamed like a 16 year old at a John Mayer concert.

And maybe he totally does feel that way, maybe he’s totally about telling men to be good to their daughters because daughters will love like they do, and maybe he totally never lets his lady’s head hit the bed without his hand behind and maybe, I mean, maybe he really never did live the dreams of the prom kings or the drama queens. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, okay? But he’s still lying to humans everywhere, all the time. He is the minority of people who think that way.

Same with Ray. I don’t believe people like this exist. “you will shelter me, my love, and I will shelter you.” Do you hear how much he means it? He means it so much. So sexily breathily and slightly strained and oh my god, he means it. He’s the only one. Because come on, do you think someone is going to say that to you? Because that’s what Ray is promising when he sings this song, whether he means it or not.

Someone might say this to you, and then they’re going to cheat on you, or you will get annoyed with how they load the dishwasher, or maybe your cat just doesn’t trust him.

Singer-songwriters just lie to us all day. All day. Fiona Apple is the only truth anymore.
